Ski down-under gives more bang for your buck

According to a recent Roy Morgan report, it is cheaper to ski in Australia compared with slopes in New Zealand or other overseas destinations, saving snow enthusiasts up to around AU$3000. The Australian travel industry celebrated the best in business at the National Travel Industry Awards (NTIA) gala event on Saturday evening at the Westin in Sydney. Toasting the crème de la crème of the industry, the event saw many smiles after a trying year for a lot of travel companies. Going for gold in London

The 2012 London Festival (until September 9) kicked off celebrations last month followed by The Fringe 2012 (from July 20), with the Summer Olympic Games (July 25 to August 12) hot on their heels. The Qantas Frequent Flyer program has been overhauled, allowing more members to use their points to upgrade on flights. The new system now allows passengers to have a better chance of securing an upgrade right before boarding to experience a more premium flying experience. Members can also now choose to upgrade on different sectors of a flight. The technology will hopefully soothe frustrated passengers who have been denied upgrades only to see multiple empty seats on the aircraft due to no-show passengers.

Hawaiian to Auckland

The move also marks a milestone for Hawaiian Airlines, as it will become the only U.S. carrier to fly to New Zealand, significantly improving ties between the two countries.

Etihad Airways has signed a global agreement with travel site, Wego.com, to give users full access including last seat availability to the airline’s entire online inventory. Visitors to the site will now be able to either book directly on Wego.com or be given the option to visit Etihad’s website directly. According to the company, the number of travellers using Wego.com to search for routes via Abu Dhabi has more than tripled while Etihad continues to grow its global network.

Emirates’ European expansion continues with the launch of a non-stop daily service to Lisbon, less than a week after the airline began flights to Barcelona. As the only Middle Eastern carrier flying into Portugal, the airline now easily connects European passengers to the Far East and Australasia. Beijing’s airport to become world’s busiest

It’s a big year for Beijing – literally. According to new reports, before 2012 is out the city’s Capital International Airport will become the world’s busiest airport, overtaking Atlanta. Predictions indicate that more than 55 million passengers will use the airport this year, with researchers suggesting that there is potential for it to grow to 10 times this in coming years. Small wonder that the Chinese capital has commissioned a new “mega-airport” that will include nine runways and have an annual capacity of at least 120 million passengers.

Hong Kong has topped the list as the most liveable city in the world according to a new survey, which takes into consideration global “liveablity” rankings and, for the first time, “spatial characteristics”. Amsterdam, Osaka, Paris and Sydney were ranked following the City of Lights, which won after additional criteria including urban sprawl, connection, proximity and pollution were taken into account. Vancouver, for the first time, has dropped out of the the top 10.

Direct flights link Sydney and Buenos Aires

Argentina’s national carrier Aerolineas Argentinas has commenced direct flights linking Buenos Aires and Sydney. The thrice-weekly, non-stop service sees Auckland dropped as a stopover destination, with the trip now taking around 16 hours on the carrier’s Airbus A340 aircraft. With the termination of its Auckland flights, Aerolineas Argentinas will operate Buenos Aires-Sydney on a non-stop basis, thrice weekly. Viking expands river cruising options

Viking River Cruises has commissioned six more Viking Longships for delivery in 2013, joining Viking Freya, Viking Idun, Viking Njord and Viking Odin, which were christened in March, and Viking Embla and Viking Aegir, which will be delivered later in 2012. Guests can look forward to a number of new on-board additions, including the semi-open Aquavit Terrace with retractable floor-to-ceiling glass doors, premium in-cabin amenities and sustainability upgrades such as solar panels. Moreover, sister company Viking Ocean Cruises is in the process of building two new luxury ocean cruise ships, each with a capacity of 998 passengers, scheduled for delivery in late 2014 and late 2015.

City of Churches gets better connections from Emirates

Adelaide will be the newest destination for Emirates when it flies four times a week from November 2012, upgrading to a daily service from February 2013. When the service commences, residents of the South Australian capital will have easier access to the Middle East and beyond via the airline’s growing network map. Emirates are also planning to add flights from its hub in Dubai to Lyon, France by December and Warsaw, Poland early next year. But expansion plans aren’t limited to Aussies down south, with Perth to take advantage of a triple daily service from March next year.

Thanks to our friends at Air France we got out of the office for the day and enjoyed a great round of golf at the annual Financial Markets Charity Golf Day and Gala Dinner. Held annually in February, this event as well as the  Financial and Media Markets Charity Sailing Regatta in October raises AU$1.2 million for a wide range of charities.The ASX Group and Thomson Reuters Australia (formerly Reuters) joined forces in 1999 to form a Charity Foundation with the objective of helping Australian-based children, disability and medical research charities by organising fundraising events in conjunction with the Financial Markets. Vacations & Travel magazine rubbed shoulders with local and international buyers and sellers of travel from around the globe at 2013 AIME (Asia Pacific's Incentive Meeting Expo). This is the biggest event on the Australian travel industry calendar, where key decision makers congregate to network over a three-day event of hosted parties, trade and leisure travel meetings and press conferences.
The who's who of Sydney's entertainment industry turned up for the recent opening of the city's newest hotel to receive a makeover, The Parkroyal. Located in Darling Harbour, the property has just emerged from a milt million-dollar makeover to reveal striking rooms and seriously sexy public spaces. Speaking of sexy, some of the celebs on hand to celebrate the re-launch included Casey Burgess, Danielle Blakey and Amy Milne, not to mention Timomatic who entertained the crowds into the witching hours…
