Qantas partners with Emirates

Travelling to London just got easier following Qantas’ new partnership with Emirates. Daily Qantas A380 services from Sydney and Melbourne to London will now operate via Dubai, with passengers transiting in the new Terminal 3. The frequent flyer programmes will be aligned, as will domestic services in Australia for Emirates customers. The deal brings an end to Qantas and British Airways’ longstanding partnership, and also a withdrawal from Qantas’ Singapore to Frankfurt services.

Europe surpasses the U.S. for savings

The price of accommodation in Europe continues its slump in comparison to increasing rates for stays in the U.S. according to a new survey released by Hotels.com. Value-for-money destinations now include Rome and Vienna, with prices dropping 12 and 11 percent, respectively. Other standout cities included Budapest, Berlin and Dublin. Surprisingly, the survey details that despite hosting the Olympics, London accommodation prices were flat in the lead-up to the event, forcing hoteliers to slash rates to fill rooms. In contrast, the west coast of America has seen a jump in tourists, therefore increasing their rates by up to 12 percent.

West London’s newest accommodation, Hotel Xanadu, is set to open its doors, just 25 minutes' from Heathrow Airport. The boutique property of just 46 double rooms and two suites was inspired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem "Xanadu – Kubla Khan." The chic bar and restaurant will serve Asian inspired cuisine, reflecting local flavours of the Silk Route, which also influenced the design of the guest rooms. Complimentary iPads and bicycles are also available for guests to use during their stay.

Avid skiiers already planning next year's snow outings should take advantage of the Hero Season Pass in 2013, which includes unlimited access to both Victorian ski fields, Falls Creek and Hotham Alpine Resorts. The 2012 Hero pass holders will have access to the discounted rates, AU$699 for adults and AU$399 for kids, with new Heroes able to join the club for AU$749 for adults and $429 for children. Christchurch open for travellers

The city of Christchurch is celebrating its first city-centre hotel reopening today since its devastating earthquake last year. The Ibis Christchurch, located in Hereford Street close to Cathedral Square, has undergone major renovations to all its 155 rooms. The hotel’s reopening marks a significant role in the city’s tourism revitalization, which also includes a new shopping precinct, the Re:START Mall in Cashel Street. Accor’s second property, the Novotel Christchurch is scheduled to re-open in mid-2013.

The App will also be developed for iPad and Android users, and will compliment a hard copy visitor’s guide which will be updated quarterly.

Druk Air to link Bhutan and Singapore

The national airline of the Kingdom of Bhutan is set to launch twice-weekly flights between Singapore and Paro, where Bhutan's only international airport is located. Set to start flying the route using A319 aircraft on September 1, Druk Air’s newest offering will take five hours, including a 45-minute refuelling stop in Kolkata. And this is the first of a number of international expansions for the airline, which also has its sights set on Hong Kong and mainland China.

Vail expansion

North American skiing will soon get a boost as Vail Resorts, Inc. announces a 220-hectare terrain expansion. The new terrain at Peak 6 will be ready in time for the 2013/2014 ski season, and increases Breckenridge Resort’s skiable land by 23 percent. Peak 6 will also have the resort’s first high-speed, six-person chairlift and a new fixed-grip chairlift. A wider range of snow fun will be available, with high alpine bowl skiing and intermediate runs earmarked for Peak 6.

Thailand prepares for King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament

Elephant lovers out there will not want to miss the upcoming King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament, one of Thailand’s biggest charity events. Running from September 12-16 at the Anantara resort in Thailand's Hua Hin (about a two-hour drive south of Bangkok), this year’s event will feature 16 teams from around the world, including European royalty and the NZ All Blacks rugby players. A new agreement between Air France, KLM and Jetstar has simplified travel between the Gold Coast and Europe. Passengers can now book daily one-stop flights from Coolangatta via Tokyo or Osaka to either Paris or Amsterdam, depending on whether they choose to fly with Air France or KLM. The Jetstar flights include pre-seating, food and beverages, pillows, blankets and baggage.

China Southern to Cairns

Queensland is about to get a boost of services to Asia with China Southern Airlines announcing its first services to Cairns and increased flights to Brisbane to assist with demand during peak holiday periods. Opening the Guangzhou to Cairns route three times a week from December, the airline will make it easier for Queenslanders to travel to China and beyond, with good frequency and a strong network to other points in Asia and Europe. By 2015, the carrier is expected to operate 55 flights a week from Australia and is already the leading carrier for China-Australia services.

Windowless planes for the future?

Passengers may have to wave goodbye to window seats on board the planes of the future as the world’s aviation giants, NASA and Boeing, test windowless passenger planes in California. And while comfort may be compromised, the overall goal is to reduce airfares by making carriers more fuel efficient and, sadly, by squeezing more people on board. The plane is also designed to offer a quieter trip, with just two engines and the installation of noise-shielding vertical fins. But don’t freak out just yet – the planes won’t be in operation for at least another 20 years, so you can gaze down on clouds and ocean until then.

DreamWorks plans US$3-billion movie attraction for Shanghai

Three of the top five most livable cities in the world are in Canada, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Liveability Survey. Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary, tied with Adelaide, ranked three, four and five respectively. Melbourne took out the number one spot, while Vienna ranked second in the survey that awards a city’s stability, healthcare, culture, environment, education and infrastructure. Vancouver in British Columbia is no stranger to appearing on the list, having graced the top 10 for more than six years, and was the first city presented with the title when the survey launched.

Bellagio remodels

The stunning Spa Tower at Las Vegas' Bellagio will undergo a US$40 million (around AU$45 million) facelift over the next few months, with the resort redesigning 819 guest rooms and 109 suites, to be completed by the end of the year. The remodelling comes after the resort spent US$70 million (around AU$75 million) to refurbish its main tower in 2011, which consisted of almost 3,000 rooms. The new designs and layouts of the suites, some measuring 372 square metres, are expected to complement the contemporary ambiance of the resort - a number will feature billiards lounges and separate home theatre living areas. Reservations can be made from September.

Perth tops expensive list

An Australian-focused TripIndex run by TripAdvisor has revealed Perth to be Australia’s most expensive destination for travellers, with costs skyrocketing due to high hotel prices. Comparing the cost of an evening out for two people in 10 destinations, the study also found Canberra and Brisbane ranked high driven by similar circumstances. Surprisingly, Melbourne was singled out as the most expensive city to dine out in, but those who enjoy a few drinks should avoid Sydney for a tipple as it topped the list as serving the most expensive cocktails. Not surprisingly, Wollongong offered the most affordable night out with a total TripIndex cost of AU$339.84. TripIndex was launched to help travellers trawling through the TripAdvisior site to decide where to go based on where they will get more bang for their buck. The survey was based on the combined cost for two including a one-night stay in a four-star hotel, cocktails, a two-course dinner with a bottle of wine and return taxi fares.

Fly Qantas to the Gold Coast

The thrice daily return flights between the two destinations, coupled with a refurbishment to the Qantas lounge and new self-check in kiosks, will ensure a seamless journey for passengers, especially premium and frequent flyers. The flights will complement existing Jetstar services as part of the qroup's two-brand strategy.
