TripAdvisor ranks world’s most expensive cities
June 22, 2012
It’s been suspected the strong Australian dollar made international travel feel lighter on our wallets, but now it is confirmed that the Aussie buck goes farther in the world’s most popular cities. TripIndex 2012, a new research study undertaken by TripAdvisor, reveals the price of an evening out in 48 key cities around the world, with London coming in as the most expensive destination and Hanoi, Vietnam, the least pricey. Tracked against the Australian Dollar, the study was based on the combined costs for two people enjoying a one-night stay at a four-star hotel, cocktails, a two-course meal with a bottle of wine and taxis to and from dinner. Hanoi ranked as the most affordable date night for Aussie travellers, with a total TripIndex cost of AU$144.95, whereas London was almost triple that coming in at AU$531.09. But not all European cities require deep pockets: Budapest and Warsaw both turned out to be more affordable than some Asian cities. Not surprisingly to Sydneysiders, Australia’s largest city ranked as the ninth most expensive, joining Singapore, Paris and New York in the top 10. As expected, accommodation plays a core role in determining a city as costly, with Bangkok averaging the cheapest rooms on the market – in fact, four times less than the cost of one night in London. The 10 most expensive cities were more than double the price of those in the 10 least expensive list. The research is expected to catch on for savvy travellers wanting more bang for their buck when choosing overseas holidays, but not deter those that simply want a quality experience.

It may not be HRH’s official birthday this upcoming weekend, but that doesn’t mean that Australian’s can’t celebrate the long weekend. And why not do it in style at a Peppers property close to home? The extremely comfortable Peppers retreats and resorts across Australia as well as the Peppers Parehua in New Zealand are offering special Queen’s Birthday weekend packages, with deals for stays between June 8 and 11. All of the Royal packages include high tea for two, and some even throw in a glass of sparkling and other benefits.

V&T mag dropped into Bali last month and helped the W Retreat & Spa celebrate their 2nd anniversary and what a splash it was. With local and international fashion designers on display, the W Lounge was transformed into a catwalk party zone. 2500 people flowed through the resort late into the night, moving to NYC DJ Sandy Rivera. This was the biggest ticket in Bali for some time and the resorts pulling power is a testament to just how hot this property and international hotel brand actually is.www.vacationsandtravelmag.com/Mca/874/765/3/0/0/#takeoff1 How did we cope the next day? Poolside. Don’t wait until their 3rd anniversary as the vibe, sound and style of this resort makes for a very cool holiday. In the heart of Seminyak and right on the beach, Bali beckons. |
